DETAILS: This gorgeous vintage dress has all the design elements of the classic Chinese style cheongsam, with its high neck, mandarin collar, wrap front bodice, sideseam slits on the skirt, and close-fitted wiggle silhouette that hugs womanly curves. The hand beaded spray of 3-D flowers with sinuous vining adds a somewhat unexpected element and bumps up the glamour quotient 100%!

The Cheongsam originated in the Manchu region of northern China during the Qing dynasty, probably in the 1600s, and was originally called a qipao, meaning "banner gown". The word Cheongsam is a Cantonese pronunciation of a Shanghai term. The early cheongsams were loose fitting and floor length, covering most of the body. The style became popular throughout China in the 1920s and 1930s, and became more Westernized during the 1940s, 50s and 60s - fitting closer to the body and shorter length skirts. In the 1960s, the cheongsam became tightly linked to the movie The World of Suzie Wong.
