Ruby beads, drilled for jewelry, are precious gems, and just seem to radiate happiness and positive energy! In India, ruby red is considered absolutely essential in wedding clothes.

Ruby is in the corundum family, along with sapphire, and is one of the harder gemstones, with a Mohs hardness of 9. Today, only the deep, blood red stones are called ruby. A couple of generations ago, the pink ones were called pink ruby or female ruby, but today we usually refer to them as pink sapphires. Still part of the corundum family, though.
