More Info
Purple amethyst is a rich, royal color, and counted among the semiprecious stones of the jewel pantheon. At one time, it was considered a precious stone, but this was changed because of wider availability.

Purple is the most highly valued amethyst color, but pink, which is the lighter form, has become very popular and very highly valued as well.

Traditionally, amethyst is believed to bring pleasant dreams if put under the pillow, and to relieve headaches if rubbed across the forehead. It is also credited with overcoming cravings and fears. Interestingly, the origin of this gem's name is "a methustos" meaning, in Greek, "Not drunk" because the ancients believed that it could prevent drunkenness.

Amethyst is the best known birthstone of February.
