Three beautiful antique African trade beads swing from handcrafted sterling silver hoops in this pair of artisan earrings. Also known as Annular Wound beads, these glass rings *were made in Germany in the 1800's, and were traded to the Dogon Tribe in Africa.

The colors of the glass vary slightly from one bead to another, and the shapes and sizes are somewhat irregular, making each one an intriguing little piece of artwork. At first glance, the glass seems to be opaque, but most of the beads are translucent, allowing the light to show through.

I put a rustic patina on the silver and hand rubbed it to a soft, lustrous polish. The aged look of the metal lends a raw, earthy appeal to the design, as do my handcrafted earwires. Note that I can easily switch these over to hinged lever back findings, but it will change the look of the earrings just a bit.

Measurements are approximate as no two Dogon beads are alike.

* Dogon beads were long thought to be from Germany, but now it's believed that they might be Dutch. It seems to be a bit of a mystery!
