Product Description
Antique African trade beads are linked together with handmade figure eight links to design a one-of-a-kind necklace that is loaded with raw, rustic appeal. The links were made with 20ga square sterling silver wire, creating a completely different look from round or half round wire. Adding to the antique charm of the glass beads, I oxidized the silver to give it a lovely aged appearance that works beautifully with these small works of art.

The beads, or rings, are translucent glass, in deep shades of cobalt blue and forest green. Each bead is a slightly different shape, size, and thickness.

The back of the necklace features short lengths of cable link chain that blends beautifully with the handmade figure-eight links. I chose to use a toggle clasp that was made in Thailand by the Karen Hill Tribe, from 97-99% pure silver. (Sterling silver is 92.5% pure.) Both ends of the clasp are securely wired to the chain with handmade links.

I looked for these African trade beads for a long time, taking about a year to find the strands I wanted, and another 8 months to finally cut the cloth string/ribbon they came on, and get busy with them. I loved to look at them, and wasn't in a hurry to break the strand. They're called Dogon or Annular Wound Beads, and were made in the 18th-19th centuries. It was long thought that they were made in Germany, but now it's believed that they're probably Dutch, giving them yet another name, Dutch Donuts. They were used as trade beads with the Dogon Tribe in Africa, where they were exchanged for furs, fuel, etc.

I can shorten or lengthen the necklace upon request. Please contact me before purchase to discuss details and cost.
