Product Description
Pierre Redouté's 'Primrose Auricula'. 'Auricula var. Oreilles d'Ours'.

From the London British Museum's 1987 edition of Redouté's flowers, here is a gorgeous paper featuring 'Primula Auricula'. This is one of your summer garden's showiest of flowers, the Primrose, presented by Redouté.

The paper is wonderfully heavy and smooth, the lithograph is clean and crisp, and the colors are wonderfully bright and vivid. The paper shows little tanning and measuring that perfect size for framing - 8.5" x 12" (22x30 cm) - with a nice margin for easy matting. There are no tears, creases, marks, or folds on the paper.

Flower prints are especially wonderful framed in groupings and Redoutés blossoms are absolutely gorgeous! Framed, they will work with every decor ~ or perhaps you'll copy this to use in your art? Ideal for your card and tag creations, for your collage and decoupage art, wonderful for your scrap book page making. It is a gorgeous paper!

You are purchasing an original 1987 paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) illustrated over 50 botanical books during his life. For anyone who admires perseverance and devotion to an Art, he is a remarkable role model.

He lived during a time of great political turbulence ~ the French Revolution, the Napoleonic wars and, after the defeat of Napoleon, many changes of royalty on the throne of France.

Marie Antoinette gave him his first royal appointment - royal flower painter to her court. After the Revolution and Napoleon's rise to power, he worked closely with the Empress Joséphine to document her gardens.

Redouté remained apolitical in public which allowed him to move with ease from one rulership to the next. As one of his biographers noted, Redouté's immortality rests on the fact that through the years he remained faithful to the one queen who never went out of fashion: The Rose.

*********************

Plants and seeds of "Bears Ears" were imported from Holland during the 17th century and many new varieties were raised in England, some of which fetched very high prices.

By the end of the 18th century, Auricula shows and "florists' feasts" were very popular events in England, particularly in the Midlands and North of England, areas which are noted for Auricula growing to this day.
