Product Description
1843 Sir William Jardine, Naturalist Library Hummingbird Sunbird Engraving, "Nectarinia Strangii", Plate 15
A sumptuous hand colored Victorian engraving gleaned from Sir William Jardine's 1843 natural history ornithology reference.
Finely etched and published by William H. Lizars of Edinburgh, the heavy paper is blank on its reverse, top-tipped in gold, and measures 4" x 6.625" (10x17 cm). The paper shows little tanning and there are no folds, creases, marks, or tears on the paper. A beautiful subject to frame or to use in your art.
You are purchasing an original 1843 paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
"The Naturalist's Library" was a series of 40 natural history hand colored engravings and notes published by Sir William Jardine (English, 1800-74) between the years 1833-43.
Scottish artist William Lizars [Jardine's brother-in-law] was the etcher/engraver for all 40 volumes in this popular series describing in great detail the aspects of natural history throughout the globe.
This collaboration produced one of the most charming and popular collections of natural history books. The series was divided into 4 main sections - Ornithology, Ichthyology, Mammalian, and Entomology.
Sir William was also a gifted naturalist and artist. Many of his original water colors are in the Natural History Museum, London and in the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh. Jardine was the son of the 6th Baronet of Applegirth, whom he succeeded in 1820.
