Product Description
Antique 1876 Victorian Rev F.O. Morris Hand Colored Insect Engraving Featuring the 'Brimstone Butterfly', Pl 3

A beautiful engraving gleaned from the Reverend Francis Orpen Morris's 1876 Victorian entomology volume, featuring two views of the gorgeous 'Brimstone Butterfly', its caterpillar, and chrysalis.

The heavy paper is blank on its reverse, measures 6.5" x 9.5" (17x24 cm), and shows little tanning since its protective cover remains attached. The paper is clean and clear, the engraving is strong and clean, and the hand colored engraving is bright and crisp. The paper has no creases, folds, marks, or tears.

A timeless engraving to frame and gift for your favorite butterfly lover or perhaps you will use in your art ~ your card and tag creations, scrap book page making, jewelry creations, collage, mixed media.

You are purchasing an original 1876 paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
Francis Orpen Morris was the eldest son of the Royal Navy's Admiral Henry Gage Morris and Rebecca Orpen, youngest daughter of the Rev. Francis Orpen, vicar of Kilgarvan, Kerry, Ireland. He grew up on the western shores of Ireland where he developed an enduring love of the natural world. His family relocated in 1826 in Charmouth, Dorset, England.

From all accounts, the good reverend was irascible by nature, impatient with conservatism and was a reformer, which did not endear him to many people. He had deep-seated convictions: anti-feminist, loathing fox hunting and any other destruction of wildlife, an abiding abhorrence of Darwin's evolution theories.

He was an early advocate for conservation and was instrumental in founding the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
