Product Description
Vintage 1954 Howard Pyle Tales of Pirates and Buccaneers ... aaaaaaarrrrrr

Swashbucking, dashing, Johnny Depp-handsome pirates and buccaneers!

No one portrayed pirates as well as Howard Pyle! His portraits are wonderful and, I have no doubt, Mr. Depp studied Pyle's illustrations before creating his delicious pirate character Jack Sparrow, eye-liner and all.

The originals of these lithographs were published in December 1905 Harper's Monthly for the story, "The Fate of a Treasure Town". Two of Pyle's wonderful illustrations are here and are captioned -

"The buccaneer was a picturesque fellow"

and

"So the treasure was divided"

The beautiful, heavy 2-sided paper was gleaned from a 1954 copy of Pyles' book and measures 6.375" x 9.125" (16x23 cm). There is a small 1/4" soft dog-eared fold in the lower corner that doesn't touch or effect the illustrations and matting and/or framing will easily see to it. There are no tears, marks, creases, or other folds on the paper.

You are purchasing an original 1954 paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
The buccaneer is a picturesque fellow when regarded from a distance. He belongs to no country, recognizes no kith or kin of human nationality. He spends money like a prince & is well satisfied to live rapidly, even if in so doing his death should come upon him with equal celerity.

He clothes himself in a picturesque medley of rags, tatters, & finery. He loves gold & silver ornaments - ear-rings, finger-rings, bracelets - and ornaments himself profusely with such gewgaws.

He affects a great deal of finery - a tattered shirt or even bare skin matter not much to him provided he is able to hide his semi-nakedness beneath some such finery as a velvet cloak or a sash of scarlet silk; patched breeches are not regarded when he has a fine leather belt with a silver buckle & a good sword hanging. Always there is a long-barrelled pistol or two & a good handy knife stuck in a waist-belt with which to command respect.

Such is the buccaneer of the 17th century.
