Product Description
Antique 1937 Arthur Rackham Frontispiece Lithograph For Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows"

Oh, my most favorite story from childhood! Wind in the Willows!

A universal, gentle childhood favorite, here is the Frontispiece from a discarded 1937 [and cover-less] copy of Kenneth Grahame's timeless class, beautifully illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

This lithograph features Mole visiting two bunnies and is captioned ~

'"Onion sauce! Onion sauce!" he remarked jeeringly, and was gone before they could think of a reply'

The paper shows light margin tanning and the edges are smooth and clear. The paper is clean and bright, Arthur Rackham illustration is wonderful ~ enormously frame-worthy. The heavy paper is blank on its reverse and there are no tears, folds, creases, or marks.

Measures 6.125" x 8.25" (15.6x21 cm) and shows only gentle all-over tanning. Perfect for your card and tag creations, for scrap book page making, decoupage, collage. A wonderful image to frame and gift for the new baby's room or your young reader's corner.

You are purchasing an original 1937 paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
Arthur Rackham is widely regarded as one of the leading illustrators from the 'Golden Age' of British book illustration which encompassed the years from 1900 until the start of the First World War. During that period, there was a strong market for high quality illustrated books that typically were given as Christmas gifts.

Many of Rackham's books were produced in a deluxe limited edition, often vellum bound and sometimes signed, as well as a larger, less ornately bound quarto 'trade' edition. This was often followed by a more modestly presented octavo edition in subsequent years for particularly popular books.

The onset of the war in 1914 curtailed the market for such quality books, and the public's taste for fantasy and fairies also declined in the 1920's.
