Meet the Bellybutton Family. There is Weenie, the baby of the family. Tiny, her older brother, who despite the name is bigger than his mother. Then we have is Nimble, who is mother of Weenie and Tiny and lastly Papi who is the father figure in this monster family.

Nimble loves rock climbing and gained her name from how agile and small she is. At only 12.5 cm (4.75 inches) tall and 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) wide, she is much shorter than the average bellybutton monster, but it is plain to see by her bellybutton that she is an adult. Bellybutton monsters only have outward poking bellybuttons once they become mature.

Papi is a much taller monster, who's love for Nimble is so great that he will go rock climbing with her even though he is afraid of heights. Looking over the edge of a cliff makes his legs turn to jelly. Papi is 17.5cm (6.75 inches) tall and 12.5 cm (4.75 inches) wide.

Tiny, was so named because he was born a bit earlier than he should have been and he was so tiny Papi could hold him in one hand. Well that has all changed now. He has grown to be taller than his mum and is already up to Papi's shoulder. He is 13 cm (5 inches) high and 11 cm (4.25 inches) wide.

Weenie is the littlest family member. She loves being the baby as it means everyone looks after her. She is very like her mother, and although she isn't very old she is very sure footed and is often seen running up and down hills without a trip or stumble. She does sometimes need a helping hand to get across streams and boulders, because of her size, but she is always eager to try by herself first. She is as wide as she is high and measures 8cm (3 inches) in height and width.

This family is looking to relocate to a new area, where they can have new adventures with new friends. Can you offer them a new home?

I started knitting this family when I was on a train. It was summer and there were lots of families on the train. I found the way family members interact interesting, so I decided I should make a family of monsters. I started with Weenie, who's skin was finished on that journey and then I spent a couple of days making all the rest of the family. Their bellybuttons come from a conversation a little girl was having with her dad. She wanted to know why she had a bellybutton that went in whilst his poked out. He told her it was because he was old and it popped out when he was full grown to show he had no more growing to do.

wool, yarn, stuffing, polyester, felt, safety eyes

These monsters have hand knitted skins made of a wool blend yarn. They are stuffed with polyester fibres that conform to the fire retardancy BS5852-2 standards. They have safety eyes attached to them through felt fabric,but these are small components, so I do not recommend these monsters for children under the age of 3 years.
