Product Description
This Photograph was taken while visited the Lisbon Coach Museum. Information given below is from the Museum.

In the middle of the 15th century, a vehicle different from all those used before emerged in the area of Kotze, Hungary. The body was suspended by leather straps and not directly attached to the axles as was normal practice.

The introduction of suspension made the "vehicles of Kotze" or coaches very popular in Italy. they were immediately adopted by the aristocratic families which initiated a rapid development in their design.

The roof took on a slightly curved shape and was supported by four corner post similar to a bed canopy. The four-seat body was suspended from the chassis by four straps. The axles were connected by a wooded beam that passed under the main body. The front wheels had some ability to turn but this was quite limited. The body, that did not have doors, could be closed off by cloth or leather curtains and was entered by foot-board or side step.

This vehicle still did not have seat for the coach man and was driven by a postilion, the main coachman, who rode the horse to the left of the pair harnessed to the coach, assisted by a groom who rode one of the horses of the front pair.
