These stunning earrings, so ideally named BLACK MAGIC, were created with unique black onyx cutout frames and sterling silver. Black onyx and sterling silver are such a classic, perfect combination as the color of each highlights the other. These handmade, gemstone beauties look beautiful with casual clothes but also add flair to dress up clothing! BLACK MAGIC are one of a kind (OOAK) creations and were carefully crafted by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.

The black onyx frames are novel in their construction. First, squares of black onyx were cut and then the insides were carefully cut out by hand, leaving what looks like a window frame. If you look carefully at the photographs, you can see they are not exactly the same - something I totally love about the nature of handmade items! Then holes were drilled through at the top and at the bottom. I chose to only use the top hole to hang the sterling silver bead. Once again, if you look at the photos, you will see the hole at the bottom of each frame because of the angles of the photographs. But, believe me, you don't see the holes when the earrings are being worn. The finish of the black onyx is about midway between high gloss and matte, a subtle glow when the light hits.

To add even more interest to the BLACK MAGIC earrings, I chose lovely fluted, melon-shaped sterling silver beads to nestle in the black onyx window frames. The melon beads were slightly oxidized and then polished to show their amazing detail. A 2mm sterling silver bead was used at the top and at the bottom of the melon beads and another 2mm sterling bead was placed at the top of the frame where the hole is. Everything was then wire-wrapped with sterling silver headpins to a short length of sterling silver box chain. Because of the flat construction of the links in the chain, the chain sparkles as the light hits it. The chain adds lots of wonderful movement to the earrings while they are being worn - imagine how they will look as you move your head :)

To finish BLACK MAGIC, the chain was carefully connected to sterling silver French hook earwires.

Black Onyx is believed to be a powerful protective stone and is used as a defense against negative thinking. It brings balance to mind and body and helps the wearer approach a task with greater self confidence. It is also believed to help overcome feelings of loneliness & alienation and to add comfort in unfamiliar surroundings. Silver is the metal of love and healing.

The black onyx cutout frames used in BLACK MAGIC were very intriguing to me. I just knew they would make a pair of unique, beautiful earrings especially when paired with sterling silver. I wanted to keep the design simple so chose small, fluted melon beads. I almost decided to keep these earrings for myself :)
