This antique Chinese red lacquer cinnabar snuff bottle this is signed by maker on bottom. It is a good piece to start or add to your collection,
It measures 2 7/8 inches tall, by 1 ¾ inches at the widest point. It has ornate detailing of a scenes of horses in nature. There is a different horse on each side - a horse prancing on one side, and a horse running on other side. These are on the traditional cross-hatched background.
There is a brass (?) disk on the top, and a spoon attached to the lid. There seems to be something inside, but I cannot see it. It may be the original spoon, as I think this spon is plastic.
The Chinese began carving cinnabar in about the 8th Century - applying dozens of layers of cinnabar lacquer, then carefully carving their design. Snuff became popular in the 17th century, some Chinese considering it medicinal. Snuff bottles starting appearing in the late 17th century. I believe this piece is probably from the late 1800s.
I have done research on my cinnabar objects, but I am not an expert, and can just describe what I see, not guaranteeing the history. Also I have not cleaned these pieces as this would be safer done by an expert. I have higher quality photos but too large to up-load onto Artfire. If you are interested, contact me and I can email them to you directly.
