I call this my cahier keeper because it holds one 3.5 x 5.5 inch saddle-stitched or staplebound cahier-style notebook. A cahier is a small, slim pocket notebook that contains anywhere from 64 to 96 pages of journal-quality paper depending on brand. I've included one such cahier with this keeper to get you started, a 64-page Moleskine brand ruled cahier. Once it's filled, simply slip it out of the keeper and replace it with a fresh one. There are many brands of cahier slim notebooks - Moleskine, Field Notes, Clairefontaine, Writersblok, just to name a few - and they are commonly stocked at most major booksellers, so finding replacements is easy. The keeper is made of soft, pliable 5-6 oz. (approx. 1/8 inch thick) medium-brown leather and is permanently embellished with a Bull Skull / Barbed Wire Border design. Other designs are also available in the Journals / Cahier Keepers section of my studio. Closed, it measures 4 inches wide by 6 inches long by 3/8 inch thick. It wraps all the way around your cahier to help secure loose pages and protect against bent corners. Its integrated latch opens and closes easily and lays completely flat when the keeper is open, so nothing gets between you and a comfortable writing experience.

Cahiers have become popular because they combine the quality of journal-style paper with the convenience of a notepad. Their plain cardboard binding is seriously lacking in charisma, though, so I figured a wrap of leather would lend a lot of style to the cahier's considerable substance. Incorporated a central cord design from an old map binder I once had, and several protypes later, my cahier keeper was born.
