Amethyst is one of the most highly prized gemstones of the quartz family.
The name means "not drunken" and is also known as the stone of sobriety.
Amethyst was the favorite gemstone among the high officials of the Christian Church.

Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and the Zodiac gemstone for Sagittarius and Pisces.

Amethyst is known to be a pretty durable stone, and some stones have been known to fade over time with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Water and a mild detergent with a soft brush may be used to clean amethyst.
