The fresh blue of these larimar beads recalls sunny days on the beach at any time of the year. Wear them anywhere and feel wonderful. Theyre 1.5(37mm) from the top of the ear wires, 1 long dangle.

The larimar in these beads is exceptionally pretty, bright clear blue with swirls and eddies of lighter blue and white. Larimar is called the dolphin stone because the waves of shimmering blues and greens mingled with the white veins so strongly resembles the waters that dolphins prefer. Ive had people also tell me that it looks like a picture of the water in a swimming pool!

Larimar has only been known outside its native environment for a very short time. It is one of those stones that only occur in one part of the world, a volcano on the island nation of the Dominican Republic and was discovered by Peace Corps worker Norman Rilling and a Dominican, Miguel Mendez in 1974 . It is expected to be mined out in less than 10 years.

People who are unfamiliar with larimar often mistake it for turquoise but once they learn what it is they never make that error again. Larimar has a translucency and kind of shimmery quality that turquoise never displays.

Larimar is one of the hardest gemstones to cut because the various shades all have different hardness and cleavage, meaning that it can shatter during cutting or the softer parts can undercut making it hard to polish as well. All the colors are the same material, pectolite(NaCa2Si3O8(OH) Hydrated sodium calcium silicate), with trace amounts of copper as the coloring agent , but they are different densities and pectolite is fairly brittle.
