This necklace is made using silver plated rings which are woven together in the Byzantine pattern. It is a very beautiful and complicated chainmaille pattern. The necklace measures 18 inches and has a 3 inch extension, but size can be adjusted upon request. The matching bracelet and earrings are available in my shop. This set is also available in antique silver, antique bronze, antique copper, gold plate and any combination of these metals.(see last picture) If interested, just contact me and I would be glad to post the item you might be interested in.

The Byzantine chain is a chainmaille design used in jewelry that incorporates a rope-like texture and intriguing textural design. The Byzantine pattern is one of the most durable and elegant weaves that can be used in making jewelry. This pattern is created by folding rings in on themselves and weaving through the middle of the chain which forms a box weave pattern. Of all the chainmaille weaves, the Byzantine or birdcage is perhaps one of the most attractive for jewelry. This type of chain is also very strong and durable. This elegant necklace starts out as a simple pile of rings, but winds up as a beautiful and unique piece of jewelry by weaving them together in the Byzantine pattern.

The roots of chainmaille jewelry date back to the 5th century, when it was used by the ancient Celts to make armor for the warriors of the time. The name "mail" is derived from the French word "maille", which comes from the Latin word "macula" which means, "mesh of a net". Today chainmail is used to create beautiful and elegant jewelry for both men and women. Artisans sometimes incorporate gems and beads into jewelry pieces and some still practice the art of making armor.

I stand behind all of my work. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, please return it within 30 days for a complete refund (minus shipping charges). I design and handcraft each piece of my jewelry. I can easily modify many of my items to suit your style and size. I love to hear your ideas and would enjoy customizing a piece just for you.

Each piece of jewelry will arrive in a cotton-filled 'by Brenda Elaine' gift box and is shipped in a padded bubble mailer. I can usually ship within 24-48 hours.
