Biedermeier is an elegant style of bauernmalerei (folk art) found more often on Swiss period furniture than on antique boxes. In this style, the background is often done with Kleister (a glue like glaze) that is colored with natural pigments such as crushed black walnut shells, coffee and the like. This enables the folk artist to achieve variegation and depth in the background so that the motif appears to float. Typical schemes are blue & black and red & brown. In this piece, the same color blue was toned down with black and toned up with white and used to create both the stippled background and the floral foreground. The shading as well as the white accents help to define this typical rose design.
