This rug is the "crazy quilt" of rag rugs, and it's pure fun! It's yet another of many fabulous estate acquired rag rugs that are a charming piece of Americana, and they speak well of the frugality of another generation whose creativity was put to use creating everyday items. As with all of my shop's rag rugs, this was made and kept by a lady from the Virginia and southern Maryland area, and who lived to age 100! Her grand-daughter-in-law has shared that she stopped making them in the 1960's, so most will be antiques.

Crocheted with a crazy, fun variety of materials - a combination of cotton and synthetic fabric knits and weaves in light and medium weights, and even includes a few bands of satin. The end effect is interesting in that the rug has two different textures due to the different fabric weights. Because of the synthetic fabric and the aforementioned age of the maker of this rug, I'm estimating that most likely this rug dates to the mid 60's. The fabrics have the colors and patterns of vintage mid 60's fabric.

This is a nice rug for the those who are looking for an interesting splash of color and interest in their decor. The primary colors remind me of crayons, so it's not hard to envision it in a young child's bedroom or play area. It would be well suited for a cottage style, country, early American home, Victorian utility spaces, and even contemporary homes and would be charming in beach, country, or mountain homes and cottages with vintage decor.

Please note that the knit fabric is heavy and rustic, and would probably not be appropriate for someone in an suburban setting that is looking for a glamor piece. However, if you are looking for something with a primitive theme with a lot of rustic character, this might be more appropriate for your setting.

The synthetic fabric makes it good and rugged, and, it will last for decades provided it's kept from direct sunlight and out of the elements.

I'm not sure if this rug has been used or not, but still retains it's original bright colors and has a lot of use left provided it's kept out of the elements and bright sunlight. The fabric is still strong and intact, and other than a few stray threads, there is really no noticeable wear. There are no thin or weak spots, holes, tears, odors and so forth. I've washed this rug, and while it's old, it's now sparkling clean and sweet smelling.

The only thing wrong with this rug is that the different weights of material make it a but fussy when first put down, and the outer edge tends to curl a bit. Once it's in place, it does fine, and the edges will lie down and should stay after it's put into place. It would do well on either a non-skid surface such as tile or cement, on top of a thin carpet, or with a thin rug pad underneath on wood or slippery floors.

Round in shape, measuring approximately 32", (81cm), across.

To clean, hand wash in cool water or in a front load machine on the "hand wash" cycle. Rinse well, machine spin, lay flat to dry in a well ventilated area, (out of direct sunlight).
