Rustic folk art - rustic and durable.

This is another estate acquired rag rug from my extensive but quickly dwindling collection. Each is a charming piece of Americana, and speaks well of the frugality of another generation whose creativity was put to use creating everyday items.

As with all my antique rag rug collection, this rug was handmade and kept by a lady from the Virginia and southern Maryland area, and who lived to age 100! Her grand-daughter-in-law has shared that she stopped making them in the 1960's, so most will be antiques.

As is the maker's style, she has created an unusual and unique rug that's crocheted with knit synthetic knit red and white and brown and white checkerboard knit prints and solid knit fabric that's been cut into thin strips and crocheted. This rug was featured in a treasury entitled "Peppermint Candy", which I think is very appropriate!

Because of the synthetic fabric, it was probably worked after the creation of synthetic fabrics, most likely dating it to the mid 1950's or somewhat later.

The synthetic fibers of this rug makes it the perfect rug for the modern decorator who is looking for all the charm of a handmade heirloom that can handle the wear of today's living because it will wear like iron. It would go especially well in a country farmhouse setting, as well as in beachside or mountain cottages, traditional, transitional, Shaker or early American homes. It would lend itself very well to kitchens, baths, summer kitchens, and recreation areas of Victorian homes.

Please note that the knit fabric is heavy and rustic, and would probably not be appropriate for someone in a suburban setting that is looking for a glamor piece. However, if you are looking for something with a primitive theme with a lot of rustic character, this might be more appropriate for your setting.

The fabric and the colors are in excellent new condition, and should remain intact for a lifetime, provided they are kept from direct sunlight and the elements.

While I believe this rug was used, it's not evident, and there are minimal, if any, signs of wear. There are no signs of pilling, and just a few stray fibers, (probably from joinig the fabric strips). Everything about this rug is still strong and intact, with no thinning, catches, holes, tears, stains, etc. The reverse side is every bit as bright and clean as the front. Because the rug will be shipped folded, it may tend to curl and bend somewhat when first unpacked, but will lie flat once in place.

I've washed this rug, and while old, it's sparkling clean and sweet smelling.

Round in shape, measuring about 26-27" )66 - 68.5cm) across.

To clean, hand wash in cool water or in a front load machine on the "hand wash" cycle. Rinse well, machine spin, lay flat to dry in a well ventilated area, (out of direct sunlight).

*International destinations - quote here is for Priority insured mail, based on Australia delivery, and is estimated. UK and EU destinations will most likely be less, and I'll refund any difference.
