The Story of Ganesh is a typical Hindu tale of respect and Love, even how harsh it may sound.

Ganesh was the son of Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati, one day Parvati went to take a bath, and told Ganesh not to let anybody in. When Shiva came home he went to see his wife, his son repecting his mothers wishes before anything else in the world said, "NO, you may not enter". Shiva was so angry he chopped off his sons head. When Paravti found out she started to cry and demanded that Shiva fix their son.

So Shiva had to find a new babies head, but he couldn't just kill any baby, so he told his minions to go out and find a mother that is sleeping with her back to her baby child. You see here in India the mother always sleeps with her face to the baby.

So the only mother they could find was a momma elephant, and they chopped the head off of the baby elephant, and brought it back to Shiva. Shiva replaced the head of his own child with that of the elephant and that is why to this day Lord Ganesh is represented with a human body and an elephants head.
