Red brass, aka jeweler's bronze or Merlin's gold, is a lovely golden color when brand-new. Over time, raw un-varnished red brass tarnishes to a pleasant, mellow dark gold shade.

All metal parts in this elegant, ornate necklace are made from untreated red brass. The piece centers around a hammered 14 gauge looped scroll. Shimmer-coated 12mm golden cut crystal beads and elegant 17x24mm clear crystal bead accents are linked on 18 gauge wire, which hang vertically from the scroll loops and end in flattened spirals. Chain-linked matching beads circle around the length of the neck. The finished length (minus the scroll detail) is approximately 19 inches. The necklace is finished with a handmade 14 gauge hammered S-hook clasp.

Many people like the color of darkened raw red brass; it has a vintage look to it. I have left this piece unpolished so that it can obtain a vintage quality. However, if you want to bring back the bright new finish, you can dip the entire piece in diluted white vinegar, then rinse thoroughly to clean it. To preserve the new finish, you can paint the exposed metal areas with varnish or lacquer.
