White Birds on Purple Satin Guitar Strap Hand Embroidered Handmade

Product Description

This hand embroidered custom guitar strap is seven white birds -- crows, swallows, doves, and hummingbird -- embroidered onto royal purple satin. The back lining of the strap is the same royal purple satin and the leather tabs are premium black suede leather.

The history and evolution of purple as a sign of regency is really fascinating. Purple dye was first developed in Tyre in ancient Phoenicia (known as Lebanon today) and was a stain extracted from certain types of snails. It was rare and costly and, for those reasons, was accessible only to those of royalty and wealth. With the demise of the Western Roman Empire in the late 400s, Tyrian purple fell into disuse and was replaced in Midieval Europe with royal purple, which was bluer in hue. It was the exclusive domain of the king and the related aristocracy. The satin in this guitar strap is an example of royal purple rather than Tyrian purple.

While birds have a long history of symbolic meaning in virtually every culture, I did not include them on this strap as a cultural exercise. I love birds in the wild and just wanted to pay tribute to their beauty. They are detailed and difficult to embroider but well worth the effort to try to capture their unconstrained gracefulness. I hope you like this strap. It was a pleasure to make it.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

I have had a number of custom orders for straps with embroidered bird images so thought I would make one generally available on a particularly beautiful color of satin.

CONSTRUCTION - The guitar strap foundation is 3 inch wide (7.62 centimeters) and 6 foot long (1.83 meters) 2000-pound test commercial grade polypropylene strap material. The strap adjusts from a maximum length of 6 feet (1.83 meters) to a minimum length of 39 inches (.99 meters).

LEATHER TABS - The leather tabs are comprised of a 3 inch by 8 inch section of top quality leather, folded over a commercial grade plastic anchor bar and trimmed to shape. The two sides of the leather are then glued with commercial strength tanner glue and double whip stitched with heavy waxed leather sewing thread designed specifically for stitching leather. The button hole is hand punched and cut to precisely fit a standard 12mm guitar pin.
