Turkoman silver with gold overlay. Teke tribal tradition. Turkoman blossom motifs in the outline and the water symbol cut-outs of the ring. Oval carnelian cabochon gem. Band is silver with no apparent gold overlay.

The Turkoman people came down from the Ural and Altai mountains into the Aral plain and spread into what became for a while the empire of Genghis Khan. They are now found in intact communities in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan and the other few 'stans of that part of Central Asia. Their folk ways and religion are hardly to be found in any place in the land called Turkey, though the languages in all those regions are dialects of the Ural-Altaic language family.

The Turkic cultural heritage, where it still exists, includes jewelry with motifs that express their commemoration of ancestors, family and nature, including the symbols of the world itself, the trees, flowers, animals and water.

This ring shows water and flower motifs. The outer edge is shaped into abstractions of flowers and inside the cut-outs are water symbols.
