Bukhara silver vintage pendant from Uzbeki silversmith handiwork. Purchased in Russia in 1999. Delicate raised silver floral patterns with pale blue enamel background. Two lovely tinker bells attached and two smaller bell-shaped beads. The pendant is complete, authentic and original work. The chain has been added in recent times. It is antiqued silver plate.

The silversmith shop had specialists who did the enamel work, just as there were specialists to do the fire gilding of the silver (application of a layer of molten gold onto the plate of silver). This piece appears to have been created by a silversmith adept at the process of enamelling. Strips of molten silver were probably applied to the domed silver shape and then ground metal and molten glass with pale blue pigment were poured into the spaces between the strips of silver.

The back of this hollow piece has the typical punched hole in the back. It is put there at the creation of the piece and I have yet to discover exactly why. It is an identifying mark in the work of the silversmiths of Greater Turkmenia.
