This is a pair of bridal bracelets hand made in Yemen in the early nineteen hundreds. The matching silver bracelets decorated with filigree and granulation were worn on the bride's wedding day and on special occasions such as the birth of a child. They also served as her insurance policy in case her husband died or was disabled and could not support her and the children. She could use the silver of her bridal dowry to buy or trade for necessities.

The silversmith trade demanded the maker of silver goods to be a designer, highly knowledgeable in the methods of producing such detailed patterns and intricate applique. This pair was do doubt proudly signed by the maker. Both bracelets bear his signature.

Even a collector whose wrist these would not fit should nevertheless be happy to have two beautiful, wearable bridal dowry bracelets in his/her collection. The bracelets are hinged and the fastener on the side opposite the hinge is concealed by a ridged column and a floral ornament. I have tried these bracelets on and they fit comfortably around my 5.75 inch circumference wrist.
