Product Description
This fine art photo of Hawaii shows examples of the volcanic rocks that eventually are ground down to form this beautiful black sand beach in Hana, on the island of Maui in Hawaii. This is the color version of this photograph. It is also available as a black and white print under a different item listing.

From an Ektachrome original. Printed on 13 x 19 paper with white borders. Mounted on 16 x 20 mat. (See shipping notes and store policies for more info on matting.) Signed and dated using no-acid archival ink.

I will print this smaller or larger on request. Contact me if you are interested.

Printed on Epson Exhibition Fiber paper using Epson UltraChrome K3 pigment inks. This paper was designed to resemble the traditional fiber-based photo paper used for decades by professional photographers.

Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. rates this paper/ink combination as stable for 90 years if framed with standard glass and 150 years framed with UV glass. Compare this to traditional silver-halide color prints, which last 50 to 100 years only if NOT exposed to light. Exposed to light, traditional color photos remain stable for only 20 to 40 years. Traditional photographic printing processes also involved the use of many toxic chemicals.

The image shown is a low-resolution, watermarked copy. The final print is made from the high-resolution original file, with no watermark.
Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
The town of Hana is famous mostly for the road that leads to it. Because of its twisty hairpin curves and scenic views, the road to Hana has frequently been used in car commercials.

Hana itself is gorgeous, by far my favorite place on Maui.

I wasn't sure I wanted to show the color versions of this and the other Hana shots. The color palette is so minimal, they almost demand to be printed as black and whites. What this color version has going for it is the very weirdness of that palette. I just loved the unexpectedness of the rusty red gravel transitioning into water that somehow looks like a liquid version of the black rocks it surrounds. Then you get past the surf lines to the water in the background and it changes again to reflect the blue of the sky and your eye pops UP and there's a peek of bright blue just where your eye wants to leave the frame. And that just bounces you right back down the line of rocks again.
