Vintage Chinese white cloisonne beads that are a very rare shape - a fluted melon - and beads that we had specially made for us for a design I was doing for the Smithsonian's museum shops and mail order catalog. I combined them with nephrite jade beads and gold.

These beads are a very rare shape for cloisonne - a melon like a number of the carved stone beads I have in my shop under luxury carved stone beads. I was always looking for oddly shaped beads to add interest and texture to my designs.

These beads each measure approximately 12mm x13mm and each section of the melon has flowers in it in purple mauves with cinnabar red centers and dark jade green leaves.

I have not seen cloisonne in this shape since we purchased it so many years ago in Asia.

You wont find any beads like this nowadays and certainly not in your local bead shop or neighborhood gem show!

I sold vintage Chinese cloisonne beads such as this through the Smithsonian Institution's museum shop and catalog during the 1980s and they were also featured in trunk shows at Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue.
