Product Description
Raku is a pottery technique that is believed to have originated in 16th century Japan. According to aficionados, the raku technique primarily revolves around its firing process, although involvement often goes much deeper into its philosophy, roots and cultural significance. The raku method involves firing pieces at a rapid pace (unlike other pottery techniques where firing proceeds slowly), with the wares reaching temperature in as short a cycle as 15-20 minutes. The seasoned potter's trained eye judges glaze maturity without the use of measuring devices. When the firing is determined to be completed the wares are immediately removed from the kiln. Since at this point the glaze is molten, tongs or other lifting devices are typically used, although our artist generally transfers her pieces by heavily-gloved hands for better control and expedience. The wares are then put into a container with combustible material such as sawdust or leaves and allowed to smoke for a predetermined length of time. The carbonaceous atmosphere reacts and affects the glazes and clay, and imparts unique effects to the finished products, including metallic and crackled glazed surfaces and black unglazed clay.

Raku is typically treated as decorative, as the fired ware is porous and generally unsuitable for functional use such as serving food or holding water. To clean, a light dusting is preferred; if needed, wash in warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
