TECHNIQUE:
I start with one or several clear, detailed, well-lit photos to create a preliminary sketch. Then I use a hard graphite pencil to map out areas of light and shadow. Using softer pencils, I flesh out the various values, bringing the image forth. I detail the eyes first, because once I get them down, the rest of the drawing falls into place. I spend a lot of attention to details, textures and blending, continually referring to the photo and making adjustments where necessary. When I think I'm finished, I always let a portrait sit, at least overnight. I take another look the next day, with fresh perspective, to see whether I detect final touches that could enhance the image further.

This dog has melting brown eyes and an easy smile. I have drawn his portrait from a simple snapshot taken in the backyard. This is an example of my custom pet portraiture.
