On my last trip to Ireland I was deeply struck by a tour of Newgrange a mound that dates to almost 6000 years old. The entry stone and many stones surrounding the mound have these spiral designs carved into them. The carvings lasted through thousands of years. So long in fact their meaning is lost. It is almost impossible for me to fathom what life must have been like back then but knowing how much work that kind of carving would take now with our technology only heightens my interest in why someone so long ago with simple tools would have taken the time to make these designs.
