There was a time when even dry cleaners had big neon signs hanging outside, as demonstrated by the sunrise-like steel beauty in this 5x7 documentary art photo. Paint in orange and yellow is flaking off the sign's steel body, but the neon tubes themselves are in beautiful shape-near perfect, really. The steely blue sky behind the neon contrasts beautifully with the sunny colours of the sign itself.

I stumbled across (and couldn't wait to photograph!) this neon while driving through Beckley, West Virginia; Beckley has quite a few really marvellous vintage signs, neon and otherwise! Though I was on my way to visit a friend further South, I ended up spending a great deal of time taking photos of Beckley's many terrific vintage signs.

Beckley has been doing a great deal of development in the past decades, so it was especially nice to see a survivor like this vintage neon beauty. I don't even mind the flaking gold and orange paint-so long as the sign and neon itself survives.
