The copper statue of a classically-clad woman reminiscent of a Greek goddess, now soft green with age is in this 8x10 art photo. This aqua-green lady, depicting charity in an historic Ohio cemetery, has an open, winsome expression and graceful hands that really caught my eye. This lovely sage green sculpture sits at the base of a classical-looking pillar, forever lovely. The woman's hair is simply arranged in Jadeite-green waves gathered behind her neck; her hands gesture silently above her breast as she gazes ever-so-slightly upward. Her beautiful blue-sage-coloured face is noble, lovely, and, somehow, forgiving-frozen into this beautiful expression for all time in bronze.

The lovely lady in statuary reminds me of the Greek muses, yet it is difficult even for an artist to argue that any of those goddesses surpass that of love. Though once gleaming bronze, the statuary in this 8x10 art photo has oxidized into a soothing, lovely sage green. The marble pillar and pale blue sky behind her are soft-toned as well, making this a calming, serene photograph.

Some may find it odd that I and other photographers (I'm far from the only one!) like to go and photograph what we find in old cemeteries. But considering the intent of many older cemeteries-that they should be peaceful, verdant parks so citizens could find a quiet place for repose and to enjoy nature-it makes great sense to me that many people, including photographers, are drawn to them.

The mature trees and flowering plants so often lend a feeling of safe seclusion and enclosure; the walking about looking at names and years and wondering about the lives of those who have gone before us; the beautiful monuments and memorials to the dead of the sort we rarely see today; and most of all, the calm. The serene surroundings, often very lovely, the escape from the hustle and rush of our lives today. The graceful vistas, nature married with humankind and beautiful memorials such as the handsome woman in this photo, soothe the mind and spirit. Cemeteries offer much to the living.
