The worn golden deadbolt, the enormous, old-fashioned key resting temptingly in the lock, glows softly against the minty-sage green door in this 9x12 art photograph taken in one of Virginia's many historic homes. Though the pale green paint was perhaps slapped on in a bit of a rush, or maybe by an inexperienced hand, its carved wood is still a handsome sight. The door is well-worn, we can see-over the decades, the green door's edge and the area near the gold-toned deadbolt especially have earned a few dings and scratches. The photo proves that the grain of the door's wood is still apparent despite what must be countless coats of paint, and the craftsmanship-perfectly straight cuts and assembly-probably cannot be hidden by much aside from complete destruction.

The golden doorknob (which surely can't be made of actual gold!) in the right-hand side of the photo has been worn perfectly smooth by numberless hands, save the very tip of it, which doesn't have the luster of the rest of the knob. Rust-colored screws match the rest of the doorknob's assembly and mount better; all of the parts show age and wear differently. The different shades of gold, copper, and bronze on the doorknob, plate, and key contrast very prettily with the mint-green door.

Isn't there something magical and mysterious about a closed door...with a beautiful golden key waiting in the lock? Something that sparks the imagination? Yes, it was tempting indeed-it took me a bit of effort to capture this photograph instead of, yes, peeking to see what was behind the door, as the key is, we can see, already turned.

Looking at this door, I couldn't help but wonder how many hands--and whose--have turned the pretty key and touched the worn doorknob in this handsome old home. I do love a mystery-particularly one as pretty as this.
