The griffin is a mythical creature with the face, beak, talons and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. At times, it is portrayed with a long snake-like tail. In some traditions, only the female has wings. Its nests are made of gold and its eggs resemble agates. Pliny believed griffins came from Northern Russia. Aeschylus thought they originated in Ethiopia; and Bullfinch wrote that their native country was India. In its body, the griffin is blessed with the speed, flight, and penetrating vision of the eagle and the strength, courage, and majesty of the lion.
In symbolism, the griffin combines the symbolic qualities of both the lion and the eagle. It is the king of birds and lord of the air united with the king of beasts and lord of the earth. That is, of course, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Anyway, this pair is a 1/8" hand cut silhouette that you can either display on the included base or use it as a wall decoration. It is cut from 1/8" Baltic Birch and includes a base of Eastern White pine for easy display. The silhouette measures 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" including the base. It is painted with several coats in a deep black color paint.

Our silhouettes make an interesting and unique addition to any decor at home or office. Display it on a desk, shelf or bookcase. We like to display them on window sills or on the top of the bottom sash of a double hung window. The natural back light of the outside really highlights them. Many people have purchased our silhouettes for wedding cake toppers or reception table decorations. In addition they have provided table decorations for many special events. You can also use them as a wall decoration by not using the base and with a small hanger or adhesive mount them on the wall. A word about how we make these silhouettes. They are totally hand cut on a scroll saw, sanded and then hand painted. No automatic cutting machines are used and so we classify our silhouettes as handmade. If this is of interest to you please take the extra time in reviewing our approximately 300 different designs.

To save on shipping costs and to allow you to use the silhouette alone as a wall or furniture decoration the base and the silhouette are shipped unattached. To permanently attach the base to the silhouette just put a dab of household or common wood glue in the slot of the base and carefully insert the silhouette.

As with any of our items you must be 100% satisfied or you may return the item within 14 days for a full refund including all shipping charges. We do ask that you contact us by email before returning an item which includes the name of the item and your preference regarding receiving the refund.

Our 1/8" silhouettes are normally shipped first class mail in a padded envelope, however we will ship Priority Mail if you so desire. Shipping charges are as displayed on the items listing and we do ship worldwide. We will combine shipping cost on multiple item purchases.
