Product Description
This unusual wallet or clutch made from a spiderweb print fabric is the perfect accessory to take to a Halloween party. The black and white pattern used for the outside and the lining is accented by the rich red batik on the front. The Patchtique asymmetrical clutch is known for its hand finished acrylic glazing, which provides protection against moisture and stains as well as creating a texture similar to soft leather, a great choice for those who prefer to buy vegan.
Spiderwebs, also known as cobwebs, are made out of a special silk and have been in existence for 140 million years. An interesting fact: The tensile strength of spider silk is greater than the same weight of steel and has much greater elasticity. Its microstructure is under investigation for potential applications in industry, including bullet-proof vests and artificial tendons.
Throughout human history, the spider has starred in many myths and superstitions. Her association with Halloween indicates that she is something ominous and potentially dangerous. Throughout Africa, the spider is either a trickster or a great god. The Japanese believe that a spider woman can ensnare careless travelers. In contrast, the Pueblo Nations of America believe that Spider Woman created the Universe. The Greeks and Norse looked upon spiders as the weavers of people's fates and connecting the Past with the Future. In Western Christian civilization, spiders represent human frailty and the enticement of evil; their webs are traps into which people become ensnared by vanity or foolishness. However, the famous book "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White, shatters the myth of the evil spider by portraying Charlotte as a caring and selfless friend. Indeed, the spider and her web play an intricate role in the natural cycle of life and death available right outside our door.
This purse was hand sewn in my studio overlooking the Cascade Mountains east of Seattle. The design itself has been "road tested" as both a clutch and a wallet, or it can be used as a jewelry or makeup bag.
