Product Description
30% off original price! Classic Black Mantel Clock made by The Sessions Clock Company, before it discontinued manufacture of spring-driven clocks in the 1930's.

This case is a rectangular ebonized pine with 4 metal decorated feet, the front feet being more elaborate than the back. The roaring metal lions on each side add to the elegance of the clock. The 4 columns on the front are roman style, and in between them are decorative scrolls. The faux marble finish on top of the columns and along the base is in very good condition, though with some wear on the corners of the front of the base.

The window covering the face of the clock opens, and you can see the writing 'MADE BY THE SESSIONS CLOCK CO., FORESTVILLE, CONN., U.S.A' very clearly.

It is in working condition, and the chime on the hour is an impressive sounding 'cathedral gong', one gong for each hour. A simple bell rings to mark the half hour. The key may not be original, it has 'PM, WEST GERMANY' written on one side, but it does wind both the time and chime.

It does need cleaning and reconditioned. The spring has not been over-wound and is in good condition. It chimes about a minute or two after the hour and half hour, so would need a small adjustment to fix that as well.

The Sessions Clock Co. was founded in 1903 when William E. Sessions and some of his family members took over part of the E.N. Welsh Co. in Forestville, Conn. Sessions' father's foundry in Bristol, Conn., had made clock cases for Welsh, and William had become interested in clock making.

Until the 1930s, Sessions made a wide variety of clocks, including advertising wall clocks for businesses, regulator clocks, and various styles of shelf and mantel clocks. Starting in the 1930s, the company began to make electric clocks and timers, and by the end of World War II, it was making electric movements that other companies placed in various kinds of cases, mainly metal and china. Ownership changes started occurring in the late 1950s, and Sessions was finally liquidated in 1970.

The Sessions Black Mantle Clock measures about 14 inches wide at the base, 10.5 inches tall, and 5.5 inches deep. The clock face itself is 4.5 inches in diameter, with the window and casing measuring 5.5 inches in diameter.
