This Panda sculpture is hand carved from wood, sanded smooth, and painted using an airbrush.

It is about 7 x 12.5 x 2 centimeters, or 2.7 x 5 x 1 inches. The wood used is basswood, from the linden tree of North America.

Though the Panda is in the order of carnivores, its diet is almost entirely bamboo. They used to live in lowlands, but since humans have taken over those areas, they are only found in mountains of central China.

I use knives and chisels, not a power carver, to finish shaping the basswood. This technique gives crisper details. The panda is sanded smooth, and an airbrush used to apply water-based ink, with some details being burned In. It is finished with 3 coats of water-based urethane, and signed on the bottom.

Within the one inch thickness, using carving and painting techniques, I suggest a more fully round figure. It is a unique style, which I have developed over more than 30 years.
