** The handmade (but not by me) 1/2 inch fused glass pendant is set in solid fine and sterling silver.

** The attached snake chain is sterling silver as well.

** The chain is 18 in (about 48 cm) long

** The rainbow ( roygbiv) fused glass pendant adds about another 3/4 inches (2 cm) to the necklace length.

** The silver components have been tumbled and hand buffed to a high shine, making a nice contrast with the bright colored rainbow cab.

Isn't this the happiest pendant? I'm attracted to bright colors, and the ones in this necklace can't help but make the recipient smile. I love making these necklaces. I get to partner with other great artists to create the rainbow cabs, and then watching the components come together to create a little handmade jewelry piece of art is really satisfying.

What is sterling silver? Sterling silver is a white, highly reflective precious metal composed of 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent other metal, usually copper. Copper provides the alloy with additional strength and hardness, that isn't otherwise the nature of pure or fine silver.

NOTE: The fused glass beads and cabochons I purchase are from other self representing artists (SRA). This means that the artist that has sold the bead to me is actually the artist that created the bead with his or her own two hands. It's important to me that, when possible, I know where the components I use in my jewelry are created.

Plus, it's always a benefit for me to support other small business artisans in their work. Additionally, the quality of properly kiln annealed artisan beads far outweighs that of factory made beads. I've not had breakage or cracking issues with artisan made beads. This is pretty common for factory made beads, especially those manufactured overseas and not properly annealed after firing. If I sound like I'm on a soap box about this, I apologize. I simply want to ensure that you receive the very best quality components in the jewelry you receive from me.

So what is the fused glass cabochon used in this necklace? According to fusedglass.org "the basic idea behind fused glass is that art objects can be created by melting glass in a kiln. Unlike stained glass, fused glass has no "lead lines". Dimensional (non-flat) pieces can be created without having cut and assemble hundreds of smaller pieces."

And even though they are made from glass, well made, kiln annealed (or hardened) fused glass beads are extremely durable. I've dropped beads many times, without breakage. However, even with their durability, if you drop your beads on cement or a tile surface, they can and do crack. Treat them as you would any other piece of art.
