Gambel's Quail, or desert quail, are everywhere in Tucson, Arizona. These loveable birds carry a jaunty, plumed topknot, by both the male and female, which makes them easy to identify. Male quail have a bright russet cap, with a black face and bib, cream colored belly with black and white specked feathers, while femailes have more muted colors with a grayish cap. I love watching their families walk across the road in single file. I especially enjoy seeing the mother quail lead, the babies follow, and the father quail waiting behind making sure everyone crosses the road safely!
