During the time when Catholics were persecuted for practicing their religion, these one-decade rosaries (known in Germany as 'Zehners') helped with concealment. The rosary was held within the closed hand. The cross was usually carved from wood, so the arms of the cross were shortened so as not to snap off, and the beads themselves were traditionally made of horn. The ring was placed on the thumb for the first decade and was then moved from finger to finger to keep track of the other four decades.
