This is a handsome Countess Mara Vintage Mens Tie In Gray, Red And Off White Stripes. As pictured it has wide stripes going from dark gray to light gray to cranberry red to off white and back to dark gray again repeating the pattern throughout the rest of the tie. This tie has the Countess Mara logo with the 9 point coronet embroidered on the front.

Ties build an image of confidence and power and this Countess Mara Vintage Mens Tie In Gray, Red And Off White Stripes just epitomizes both of those qualities.

This Countess Mara Vintage Striped Mens Tie In Gray, Red And Off White still has its original tags the large one of course reads "Countess Mara-New York", but it also still has its smaller tag which reads "Woolf Brothers" the store where it was originally purchased.

Tie measures approximately 53" in length and 3-1/2" across at its widest point and has one tiny stain on the back lining of the tie not something that would be noticed, no pulls or tears, only some minor wrinkling in the area where the knot would have been made. It has a reinforced neckband.

This is a rare find and especially in this excellent vintage condition. It dates from the late 1960's to the early 1970's and has obviously been well cared for in its lifetime. It originally belonged to a local professional man who was an avid tie collector for years. We acquired much of his collection from his estate. The ties range in date from the 1950's through to the 1980's.

Brief history of Countess Mara:
Countess Mara is one of the most recognized names associated with vintage designer ties! Countess Mara was born Lucilla de Vescovi in 1893 in Rome, Italy. Lucilla later marry a wealthy textile manufacturer, Malcolm Whitman in 1926.

It is said that, several years later in 1930, that she and her husband had an argument when he donned what she thought was a very boring tie, the result was that her husband challenged her to make a more interesting tie. Lucilla accepted the challenge but she encountered a few setbacks, especially when in 1932 her husband, Malcolm committed suicide.

Although he left her financially comfortable, she suffered enormous emotional trauma over her husband's death. Shortly thereafter, she decided to take a trip to Europe as a distraction and while traveling she spent time purchasing fabric and when she returned to New York she lauched her career making men's ties.

One of the marketing decisions that she made that catapulted her ties into popularity was that the Countess created "exclusive ties", usually only making fifteen dozen of each design!

She also prominently displayed her CM logo, as a part of the ties design and charged a hefty price. Mara's trademarked ties were an instant success.

Although Vescovi herself was no countess, she named her company and ties Countess Mara and included not only the CM as her logo but also included an open crown. The open 9 point crown and CM logo are found on the bottom of her ties to give them snob appeal. All of Countess Mara's designs are subtle with eye pleasing color palettes.
