This very late 50's to early 60's 3-piece wool skirt suit and matching "pin-up" sweater is Mad-Men perfect. Made by Tabak of California, it comes directly from the estate of their head designer of many years, Irene Saltern. Ms. Saltern was a costume designer for the movies and later on, a very influential figure in the booming California sportswear industry. Many of the estate pieces I have were runway samples, spec pieces, and from Ms. Saltern's personal wardrobe.


Her suit designs are generally somewhat traditional, but almost always have some distinctive treatment that keeps them from being mundane. This outfit has more than one: great detailing down the side of the skirt--fabric tabs and buttons plus a wide kick pleat at the hem; velvet collar on the jacket; and lapel lining that matches the coordinating sweater. An extremely well-put-together look, yet versatile since you can wear the suit with different tops, and the sweater with different bottoms. Other features include gusseted kimono-style sleeves on the jacket, back metal zipper on skirt, tie belt on the sweater. Jacket has open front; it and the skirt are fully lined in black taffeta. Sweater is a wool knit with some stretch to it. Both the jacket and the top have sleeves designed to end above the wrist.


Condition is excellent to near mint on both pieces; no flaws noted.


Size: Extra small to small (about 2 to 4, possibly up to a small 6), but don't go strictly by my size estimate--use the measurements. We suggest you measure a similar garment you own to determine fit. Please leave room for movement, and remember that in a suit jacket, you need to allow a little extra room for a blouse or sweater underneath. Note that suit was slightly big on the manni and will look more fitted on the right-sized body. We measure on outside of garment, laid flat but not stretched, unless otherwise specified.

Bust: 35 1/2" to 38", unstretched to comfortably stretched; Waist: 32" to 34", same; Around hem (above hipline): 33" to 36", same; Sleeve: 14 1/2" at underarm seam; Length: 20 1/4" down center back; Shoulder to shoulder: N/A (raglan sleeves)


JACKET, measured as it lays naturally flat, with front slightly overlapped; these are minimum dimensions, since jacket can fall open when worn for a flexible fit:
Bust: 38"; Waist: 36" Around hem: 36"; Shoulder to Shoulder: Approx. 16" (estimated, as there is no shoulder seam); Sleeve: 28" from neck, measured on outside seam; Length: 21 1/2" down center back


SKIRT
Waist: 26 1/2"; Hip: 37 1/2"; Length: 24 3/4" down center back
