The style of this ballpoint pen and letter opener desk set is Classic Sculptured with 24kt Gold and Black appointments. At 5 3/8" in length, the pen is well-balanced and comfortable to hold. The letter opener has an overall length 7 7/16" with a 3 1/2" long blade.

The pen is supplied with a Private Reserve Easy Flow 9000 M ink refill (Parker® style) made by the Schmidt® in Germany. The 9000 refill utilizes a specially formulated ink that has a lower viscosity than regular ballpoint ink. This creates an ultra smooth and easy feel as the writing tip glides effortlessly across the paper. This special refill dramatically changes the way your ballpoint pen writes. Essentially giving it close to a roller ball feel, but with the convenience of a ballpoint. A standard Parker® style refill is included for those who prefer the conventional feel of a ballpoint. Replacement refills can be purchased at your local office supply store.

The wood used in this Classic Sculptured Desk Set is Wavy Black American Walnut (Juglans nigra). The mature tree is described as rather large. It is reported to attain a height of 70 to 90 feet (21 to 27 m), with a trunk diameter of 24 to 48 inches (60 to 120 cm). Boles are reported to be often clear of branches to 50 to 60 feet (15 to 18 m). Although Black walnut lumber is reported to be available, supplies are not as abundant as they once were, and its use is reported to be down because of high prices. American black walnut, which is reported to produce the greatest variety of figure types than any other tree, demands a high price because it is so well respected that buyers are not deterred by the price. The color of the heartwood varies from light grayish brown to deep chocolate brown to an almost black purplish brown. The appearance of the wood is usually described as warm and inviting. The wood is famous for its wavy, curly and mottled figures which are obtained from burls, crotches and stump wood and the pieces used in the desk set are superb example of those characteristics.

The desk set was made from a solid pieces of black walnut heartwood. The grain of the wood in the pen was oriented to match between the two barrels. A slight crown was turned in each of the three barrels to also give the Desk Set a unique custom look and to further accent the Wavy American Black Walnuts distinctive character. The barrels have been hand turned and finished on a wood lathe. Because they are each done by hand, no two will be exactly alike.

The barrels have been treated with a clear Danish oil finish and then polished to a high luster with multiple grades of high quality polishing compounds. A final application and buffing with several coats of Carnuba wax completes the finishing process. The finish is very durable and resistant to moisture and oils from hands. With proper care you should be able to enjoy your pen and letter opener for many years to come.
