What is the difference between Labradorite and Spectrolite?
Fundamentaly, nothing. Technically this type of feldspar is characterized as being a labradorescent sodium rich plagioclase feldspar known as the mineral labradorite.
Once upon a time Labradorite was characterized as Labradorite from the Labrador region of Canada and Spectrolite was characterized as Labradorite from Finland. The Finns utilize Spectrolite as a trade name associated with material mined in their region of the world. Labradorite has since been found in many regions of the world, each with its own particular body color and cutting characteristics.
In modern world markets though, Labradorite has come to be associated with material that is massive or monochrome and of inconsistant orientation, more suited for carving or making spheres from. Spectrolite is a term better applied to the more solid, and colorful forms of Labradorite regardless of where the material is actually mined. Spectrolites are characterized by sheets of intense color(s) and often find applications in jewelry and intarsia.
