This hand-made brass circle locket tells the story of Nona, a woman who understands the magic of birdsong. I made it from patterned brass and placed a cup of brass on the cover treated with a rust patina to form a nest. Inside sit three sterling silver eggs, all supported on a handmade sterling silver branch. The nest is surrounded by silk fiber--wonderful nest material. Inside the hinged locket is a vintage photo of a lovely lady and her tiny goldfinch, imprinted on a brass disk. On the other side of the locket interior is a tiny print on canvas of a wren that I carefully hand colored with oil pastel and framed with copper dusted with silver. A tiny feather and silver set peridot accent. The 2-inch locket is removable to open, hung on a hammered sterling silver hook that serves as the pendant bail.
This locket was designed around the poem you see below--an original written by me and included with the locket. Hung on an 18-inch sterling silver snake chain. Truly original, a tribute to Spring and to everyone who understands that birds are indeed MAGIC on the wing.
Nona
She wears birds in her hair like others wear bows
wrens, warblers, jays, cardinals and once two young crows
Hummingbirds nest in her teacups from China
and her doorbell is answered by a French speaking myna
In her foyer stands a silent old grandfather clock
that's now home to swifts that arrive by the flock
Her windows are open no matter the weather
for her winged companions who pay her with feather
Fine feeders and houses she crafts with great care
for purple martins and swallows who come to live there
On her shoulder one goldfinch who tickles her ear
and whispers sweet birdsongs only Nona can hear
Nona's house on the hill, from a distance, they say
looks just like the birdhouses she builds to this day
When she comes into town, she dresses her best
long locks held by sparrows, a nest at her breast
There are eggs in her pockets colored beige, blue, and white
and if she stops by your shop, be careful, she might
Try to pay for a purchase with bluebirds or worse
with a tiny screech owl that lives in her purse
The birds follow Nona like a cloud so I'm told
a rainbow of feathers--a sight to behold
Some say she's crazy but I think she's grand
waving with a hummingbird perched on her hand
I see her laughing, face turned toward the sky
arms reaching to Heaven as if she too could fly
No, Nona's not crazy, in fact she's quite smart
she opened her windows and opened her heart
To a life filled with Joy--that's what Happiness brings
special delivery to Nona via feathers and wings.

Spirit Series - Caterpillar Queen I love butteflies and moths and use them frequently in my jewelry designs. I support "butterfly farming", where moths and butteflies are raised in captivity for trade instead of capturing wild insects. The funds raised often go toward environmenta...
Order in the Chaos - Sterling Silv... Sterling silver trapeze pendant featuring brass whistle, silver dome chime, antique porcelain doll arm, vintage salt spoon handle.
Stitched - Copper and Brass Necklace This was a fun necklace to make. I cut, split and hammered one-inch copper and brass disks. I "stitched" them with sterling silver wire. Each disk is riveted to the other using copper wire. I finished the design with antiqued copper chain. Very ru...
