Meet the Maker: JSmaz

I have been obsessed with beading for almost 13 years. I enjoy the freedom and endless possibilities to create that beads offer me. I largely make one of a kind or limited run pieces, mainly because I have too many ideas to do more than one, and who wants to wear the same thing everyone else has anyway? I love work with people to make a special piece that they will cherish.
I also love to give new life to broken and outdated jewelry. After a friend brought me several pieces to remake for her, I realized how much jewelry I had in my own jewelry box that was collecting dust and have begun to remake some of it. I have also raided the jewelry boxes of other friends and family members. If you have a special piece that needs some TLC, perhaps I'm just the person to help you with it. I have a "before & after" section in my web gallery if you'd like to see some examples.
In my non-beading life (if it's possible to separate) I am a military spouse to a wonderful husband of 15 years who is an absolute dear to put up with my beads creeping into every part of the house. We have a wonderful son who's not quite 3 that I'm fortunate to be at home with for the moment. We are stationed in Italy at the moment, north of Venice near the Italian Alps. While it's difficult to be away from family & friends, it's a fantastic opportunity to see other parts of the world, and we're trying to make the most of it.

My 'humble' beginnings as a bead artist. A friend taught me basic loomwork, and I promptly designed this jacket back piece for my husband. Made entirely on a $10 craft store bead loom with a pattern drawn on tiny graph paper, it took me about 6 months and the invention of a few new curse words to complete.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I have finally mastered peyote stitch and discovered the magic of Delica seed beads. This is my tribute to Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas". Zero the ghost dog is the flap, flying over the graveyard. Jack Skellington is on the back of the purse, and hubby found me a set of character charms to use in the fringe. The strap inclcudes the first lines in the opening song of the movie.

This is my very first contest entry. I won an honorable mention in the first Caravan Beads Miyuki Delica Challenge in 2007. I was intrigued by the color palette, since brown wasn't a color I used much up till then.

Supporting friend & fellow bead artist Scarlett Lanson of Beadwork magazine, I entered this piece in her first Use the Muse contest and won 3rd place. Check out www.thebeadersmuse.com to see all the fantastic entries from rounds 1 & 2!

This piece was made for the Int'l Society of Glass Beadmakers' Convergence competition. The theme was the 4 elements, and bead artists were paired with bead makers to create something fitting that theme. Titled "From the Harshest Elements, Beauty Emerges", it represents a lava flow on one side, ice on the other, and plumeria flowers growing from lava rock in the center. Nolly Gelsinger was my partner for the project and she made fantastic lampworked flowers plus some lovely freeform "lava" and icicle beads to complete the design. It is stitched partly in freeform right angle weave, and partly with snowflakes inspired by Cristie Prince's "Marrakesh" bracelet. It was auctioned at the 2009 Bead & Button show to benefit Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer.

Quick Blurb:
My name is Jeni Smathers, and I am a bead addict. Welcome to my obsession!

Interests:
Beading, wirework, chainmaille, travel, reading, Beading Daily, collecting lampwork & specialty beads

Skills and Techniques:
I enjoy loomwork as well as many off loom stitches. Peyote stitch and right angle weave are the two I use most often, but I do use others depending on the project and my mood. I do a small amount of wirework and chainmaille, and many strung designs. I'm always learning new techniques, and have more design ideas than I'll ever have time to make. I also do a bit of sewing, quilting and cross stitch from time to time.
