Meet the Maker: HarmonArt

HarmonArt is the work of husband/wife team, Brian and Emily Harmon.

Brian is an art teacher and enjoys creating art in his spare time from school. Brian has a BA in studio art education and an MA in studio art photography. Besides his earthenware works, Brian also creates and shows photographs, emulsion transfers, jewelry and drawings.

Emily grew up on a farm with a father who enjoyed growing a variety of gourds. As a result, her family was often left with an abundance of dried gourds with which nothing to do. That's when inspiration struck. Emily began painting gourds as a child and has since developed her own style fluently combining organic forms and geometric motifs. Currently, Emily grows and works on all sizes and shapes of gourds creating unique and beautiful works of art.

My son and I hard at work on some ceramic leaves.

A few Halloween pumpkin gourds. We can't keep enough made to put them on ArtFire yet. They've sold out at each of our fall art fairs. If you'd like one, drop us a line.

Quick Blurb:
We LOVE Halloween. Here we are in last year's costume...American Gothic.

Interests:
clay, ceramics, gourds, autumn, fall, jewelry, leaves, organic designs, Jesus, music, our son and family

Skills and Techniques:
We grow some of our gourd varieties and purchase some. Fresh gourds are scraped of the outer skin then hung to dry for 6 months to 3 years depending on the size. After dried, they are cleaned and then ready to be decorated. Our gourds are decorated using leather dyes, archival inks, oil pastels, and colored pencils. All gourds are sealed with a protective coating. Properly dried and sealed gourds are as durable as wood and will not rot if kept out of the elements.

Our ceramic work is all hand-built earthenware. That means no potter's wheel is used and the pieces are fired to a lower temperature than stoneware work. Our leaf items are all pressed using an actual leaf. The leaf burns off in the kiln leaving its exact unique imprint. No two leaf pieces will ever be the same.
