Artist Statement



Since the middle 1980's, I have had an uncanny ability to pick up a brush or pencil and translate what I see in my travels onto a canvas. This translation is how I pull apart an image from my memory or a picture and re-connect it into a textured impression of it's former self. For me, this translation is the addition of color, depth and movement, making the piece appear to be alive.



Currently I have been working in oil, hand stretching my canvas. I add mixed media to my paintings for highlighting and texture. The result brings my paintings to life, sometimes bursting with color and shadow and at other times silky and subdued.



I am greatly influenced through my travels, and the images that end up on my canvases are often from the places that inspire me. An afternoon spent walking through the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, inspired the "Dans le jardin" series. Another popular series are my multiples, titled "Pooling", and are often inspired from blue oceanic waters, to the reflections of sunrises and sunsets. The techniques I use exhibit a colorful, touchable world in which I paint.



Biography



I am largely a self taught artist. I lived in North Dakota for 20 years before moving to Arizona in 1992. I studied at North Dakota State University & Arizona State University. My abstract paintings consist of a multitude of mediums and I paint mainly on canvas, wood & paper.
